Proactive Computer Maintenance is Key

Windows Update Window

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is often the go-to answer for business managers, but that expression shouldn’t be applied to computer maintenance. Businesses without an I.T. staff need to be proactive in keeping their network of computers up and running. This can be as simple as cleaning fan filters and as mind-numbing as installing software updates. Updating software is necessary for security as updates are released not just to fix bugs, but also to patch security holes.

We’ve become spoiled by software that updates itself automatically, like antivirus definition files, but other applications and the operating system need periodic updates as well. Microsoft releases updates monthly. As long as your computers don’t run custom programs, like something written in-house for your own business, you can usually configure Microsoft to download and install its updates automatically.

There are other programs that require user intervention for updates. We’ll see various messages and blinking toolbar icons reminding us to manually install updates. They can be from Adobe, Apple, Epson, Firefox, HP, Java and others. They won’t go away; they just keep annoying us until acted upon.

So, forget about “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and “Just do it!”
